6   CONCLUSIONSThe labours of mathematicians have produced a vast body of what appears to be knowledge. We are however still uncertain as to what this is knowledge about. This essay develops the view that pure mathematics is about the senses of expressions (in the Fregean sense of the word "sense"). Pure mathematics is the systematic study of senses and their logical interrelations, a view captured by the slogan "Mathematics is the Science of Sense". When these senses are found to have a reference, then applied mathematics can take over these results as a technology of sense, allowing us a much deeper understanding of the items referred to.
